The recipe of military leadership……

The whole concept of military leadership revolves around the focal points of Courage, Competence and Commitment. The core dynamic qualities of a leader remain important during peace-time in general, and at battle-grounds in particular. It takes courage to withstand the rigours of war, to assume responsibility for life and death decisions, and often to “do or say the right thing” too. High morale strengthens courage, energy and the will to fight. An active and energetic personality is one of the core ingredients of a leader. Sound physical strength is essential to withstand fatigue of battle, while motivation is the life-blood to a warrior.

Of all the factors in historical equation of military success, none weighs so heavily as dynamism and motivation. The capacity to outfight the dangers, rigours and displaying aggression while squarely facing threats to uphold mission objectives, social obligations and values has been the benchmark of fighting forces. The most modern military equipment is of no use without motivated, determined, courageous and enduring individuals and teams. The famous saying goes in today’s battlefield with the same pertinence, “When the going gets tough, the tough gets going”.

Serving one’s country at the forefront requires dedication to undergo a grueling training and an equally challenging life ahead. Seeking of rewards not in cash and crop, but in sweat and blood of mission-accomplishment, finding satisfaction not in the ease and comfort of life, but in the stern and demanding environments, and practicing love for motherland not in cozy homes but at the chilling hill-tops, hottest deserts, hostile skies and deep waters entails a committed, determined, and confident human resource; those who will not be daunted by the physically, mentally and emotionally challenging work-requirements in the line of duty; those who have the desire, brain and brawn to tackle the challenges head on; and those who have not just drifted through the challenges of academic life but have strived throughout their schooling and made the most of the opportunities offered to them.
